On the 11th of January 2019, for the first time the SOYA awards were held in the city of Mombasa. Traditionally, the Safaricom soya (Sports personality of the Year Awards) awards have been held in Nairobi, but the organizers decided to celebrate 15 years of rewarding our country’s sportsmen by broadening the scope further. The Fort Jesus, one of our country most historic sites, was chosen as the venue of choice.
“Our pick on Fort Jesus was symbolic because of its resilience and strength that also depicts our sportsmen and women beside the Kenyan people,” said Mwanguya.
The site was ready and organized for the 700 guests who were expected. In attendance, were Mombasa county boss Hassan joho, Ivorian sprinter Marie Jose Ta Lou, and the Cabinet Secretary Sports Richard Echesa.
After the achievements Eliud Kipchoge had last year, it was no shock to Kenyans that he won the Sportsman of the Year award. The athlete broke the world record at the Berlin marathon and went ahead to be crowned the IAAF world athlete of the year 2018. He managed to beat Consenlus Kipruto, Elijah Mnagoi, William Ambaka, and Patrick Matasi.
The Sportswoman of the Year award was won by Beatrice Chepkoech after she beat Hellen Obiri, Janet Okello and Fatima Zarika. The most promising Player of the Year award went to Angela Okutoyi in the girls’ category while Edward Zakayo won the boys award.
Other winners in the various categories were Athletics Kenya, Football Kenya Federation, Gor Mahia, Harambee Stars, and Telkom Kenya.
