1st runners up for the Teacher of the Year award from Taita Taveta County

The first runners up for the Teacher of the Year Award has encouraged students to keep practicing Mathematics to score better grades in the subject and the academics in general.

Speaking during her homecoming ceremony held at Dr. Aggrey High school in Wundanyi, Mrs. Grace Mabuti who is the Head of the Department of Maths at the institution said that the subject is a constant.

“The easiest subject is Maths because 1+1 will always be two. All is out of practice. Maths is a skill and you have to practice. Do a lot of practice so you can be able to get that grade you desire,” said the tutor who also teaches History and Government.

Mrs. Mabuti joined Dr. Aggrey in 2008 which was her first posting. Through what she terms as team effort, mean score for Maths has rose from 3.64 in 2009 to 8.15 in 2017 KCSE exams. In KCSE 2018, the school attained a mean score of 6.74.

The Moi University graduate was voted the best History and Government teacher in Taita Taveta (2013-2018) and Mathematics (2013-2017). Her journey to the top teachers award was not easy as she narrates.

“In 2014 I participated and emerged position 2 at the County level. Last year, I also tried my best, almost gave up. This year, I topped sub county, county and at the regional level and now position 2 at the national level,” remarked Mabuti.

She dedicated the award to the school, the County Government of Taita Taveta and Taita Taveta community at large.

The CECM in charge of Education and Libraries Dr. Frank Mwangemi told the students to pull up their socks for better results in the national exams. He challenged them to identify their purpose in life to bring out their potential in academics and co-curriculum activities.

“Candidates, Mrs Grace has set the standard for you. The bar has been lifted higher, we shall be waiting to see the score. We have seen the caliber of the teachers we have so we expect the best from you,” said Dr. Mwangemi.

He glorified the teacher for putting the region on the map and presented her with a gift from Governor Granton Samboja who has been championing for better academic standards for this region.

He further encouraged the students to take academics as an adventure and take up every challenge with vigour and tenacity.

Wundanyi Sub County Education Director Ochieng Owango thanked the parents, teachers and other stakeholders for their combined effort to post the best teacher in the region.

Dr. Aggrey Deputy Head Teacher Mr. Morekwa Nyakundi said the success was a great achievement that cannot be forgotten for a very long time since the region has never had any teacher achieving that position.
