Muhuri holds the second media workshop for Taita Taveta journalists

For a second round the Muslims for human rights organization held a media workshop at the palace resort on the 12th and 13th of November 2019. The two-day workshop brought together Taita Taveta journalists from the different media houses in the country, and bloggers from within the county.

The event was a follow up to the previous Muhuri led forums that was mainly to create awareness and help journalists, law enforcement officers, and HRDs understand the part they play in the fight for human rights. The program under Muhuri and InterNews was quite informative and eye opening as it helped journalists see human rights reporting from a different perspective.

Following the two previous meetings, the meeting this time around expanded the knowledge of journalists in the aspect of telling human rights stories. Led by Mr. Okado from Muhuri and Mr. Shitemi from InterNews, the discussions went further to help the media society understand the various aspects that exist in human rights reporting.

Various aspects of reporting were highlighted especially the idea of telling solution based stories as well as capturing human rights perspective in the stories that are told by the media. A presentation on the laws that affect the media was done in which the media were able to understand the regulations to follow. The forum went further to ensure all present were well aware of the role the media play in highlighting human rights problems.

With various stakeholder’s present discussions were done on how journalists can tell story with more impact on the society. The main human rights conflicts highlighted during the forum were: human-wildlife conflict, gender based violence, water and land problems, and the mining rights.

Members present were able to present their opinions on what prevents them from telling stories as they should, be it; intimidation, lack of funds, lack of the technical equipment, and many more. A deeper knowledge into InterNews, an international organization that works to empower people around the world with quality and trustworthy news and information hence helping all present understand how to work together with the organization.
