Taita Taveta’s Golden boy, Phanuel Mkungo, caught in race short-cut mishap.

He has been celebrated far and wide. Ran along some of the best athletes and competed for some of the Coveted prizes on globally recognized world stages. Notably, he became a sensation after the Boston Marathon win in the US. And has since been an instant role model at least regionally speaking. His success has attracted an uncalled for ‘burden’ of carrying Taita Taveta County flag with pride in every possible chance where need be.

Saturday’s race at the Madoka 14th Edition wouldn’t come with any less of an expectation at an individual or county level. Considering this was the same platform through which he rose to be a world champion, winning the trusts of the likes of the Patron and Athletics Kenya fraternity at large, all eyes were set on nothing but the ULTIMATE PRIZE!

Until it wasn’t.

Phanuel was one of the artists caught in the mishap that drew missed reactions having completed the race earlier than expected through a shortcut. According to his fellow colleagues who briefed the media on the incident, the claim  that they were misled as a result of improper marking as well as the bad weather attribute.

A disappointed Marsden Madoka, termed the incident as unfortunate and hoped for better.

“Leo Kijana wetu Phanuel ameteleza, ila twatumai Kesho mambo yatakuwa mazuri” He said.

In the spirit of optimism, the Rtd. Major highlighted he will fully retire upon Phanuel winning another world championship, a promise Phanuel looks forward to keeping
