Young Mwalugha beats the odds to make a living through art.

14 year old Kelvin Mwalugha from Shighalo village of Wundanyi is not the normal teen you see every day. His story comes both as an inspiration and a call for support. My first encounter with Kelvin was at Distar Hotel Voi showcasing his amazing pieces of art.

After completing his primary school education and not performing so well in 2016 , Kelvin decided to join Mwagafa Polytechnic in 2017 to pursue his passion in Fashion and Design. Having come from a humble background raising school fees and buying equipment for his course materials has been quite a challenge. Young Kelvin did not despair though being an artiste, Kelvin decided to turn his passion into business.

During his free time and after school, Kelvin makes pieces of art ranging from animal portraits, landscapes and architectural designs. Wundanyi being a smaller market for his products. Kelvin travels all the way from Wundanyi to Voi every day, a distance of about 50kms. At Voi, Kelvin hawks his drawings at public places ranging from hotels, restaurants, offices, and in the streets. His art goes for 50 bob each selling around 10 pieces every day and uses the proceeds to supplement his fees, purchase of materials for his Art and Design course and sustain himself in college.

Kelvin’s story is quite an inspiration especially in this age of youths lamenting on unemployment. The youth should create opportunities out of passion and stop waiting for ‘real jobs’.
